Icing sugar, also known as confectioner’s sugar, is a very handy ingredient to have in your kitchen. Most of us are comfortable picking up a bag of confectioner’s sugar from the supermarket. However, there are times when we run out of this important baking ingredient and are at a loss what to do. It is really annoying not to have all ingredients while baking. Making confectioner’s sugar is very easy and it can be done at home as well. All you need is sugar and the right equipment to grind it and bingo, the icing sugar is made. If you plan on adding coloring to the sugar, you can do it while blending the ingredients.

Here is an easy recipe for making icing sugar for your French confections:

Ingredients you will need:

Granulated-sugar

Blender

Measuring-spoons

Cornstarch (optional)

Procedure:

  • To make one cup of icing sugar, you will need one cup of granulated sugar.
  • You can use a blender, grinder or a mini-processor to grind the sugar.
  • To get the store quality of sugar you can consider adding some corn starch to the sugar.
  • Pour the sugar in the blender and grind it until it is smooth

Since you are making the sugar at home, you need a binding agent to prevent the icing sugar from caking. In order to get that smooth texture when you mix the sugar with water, it is a good idea to add some corn starch and mix it well in the sugar.

Sugar is a coarse ingredient and it can scratch the surface of the blender. So avoid using plastic or glass benders. This is one of the easiest methods to follow, when you run out of icing sugar. Homemade icing sugar is also healthy and free of preservatives and can be used to make delicious French confections.
